Rick Payne, Shane Flores and Mike Sevier – Team Fast and Good Lookin’ Except One - captured first in the relays at the Kendra Chiota Payne Memorial Triathlon!
This year’s event reverted back to a Sprint Distance Triathlon - 0.5 mile ocean swim; 15 mile bike; and 3.1 mile run. The Team added “Except One” to its name due to last year’s mishap where our runner (Rick) lost his footing and cost the team the race (or at least that’s his teammates’ version).
The Triathlon has become an annual reunion of friends of Kendra coming in for the event from across the country. Several friends formed relay teams to compete against Team Fast and Good Lookin’. The beaming smiles of all confirmed the joy they felt in being together and the close bonds they had formed through Kendra’s friendship. Click here to see photos from the 2010 event.
About the Kendra Chiota Payne Memorial Triathlon
This year's event was the UCSB Triathlon Team's 7th Annual event held at the University of California - Santa Barbara (UCSB). The triathlon team hosted the Splash n' Dash for 13 years, but in 2004 they upgraded the race to a sprint triathlon. In 2006, after the death of their teammate and friend, Kendra Payne, the team changed the name of the triathlon to honor her. Each year the UCSB triathlon team donates a proportion of the entrance fees to the Kendra Chiota Payne Memorial Fund.
